Hour of Code – Grade 5 Math

I did this cool activity with a grade 5 class today.  We took about 10 minutes to draw a square and then improve our code by using a loop.

Then students were given the certificate below and they worked on their chromebooks to earn initials on each shape.

This activity requires only a few coding skills and then students get to “create” the other shapes.  Lots of double fist pumps.  Lots of mistakes and corrections.  Lots of peer support.  (NOTE: This activity is really a math lesson about interior angles).

If you want to see the value of computational thinking in action I recommend this activity.  I am told it works well from grade 5-8.  In 40 minutes no one was able to complete all of the shapes but some kids got close.

I got the activity from Steven Floyd.
